1In one sentence
A GPT is a version of ChatGPT that someone has pre-loaded with instructions and files for one job (a recipe helper, a grammar coach, a travel planner), the GPT store is where you find them, and they are being switched off on December 11, 2026.
2New words
- GPT (as a noun) — a custom helper built on top of ChatGPT. Opening one starts a chat where those instructions are already in place.
- GPT store — the catalog at chatgpt.com/gpts, with categories and search.
- @ mention — typing @ in a normal chat to call a GPT into the conversation without leaving it.
- Plugin — the newer name OpenAI uses for add-ons that connect ChatGPT to other apps and ready-made jobs. GPTs are being replaced by plugins. If you made a GPT, open My GPTs, pick it and click "Migrate to plugin"; it moves the instructions and files for you. If you only use other people's GPTs, a Project (Chapter 1.11) is the practical replacement.
3Why you would want it
Someone may already have done the setup you need. A GPT for writing cover letters, explaining lab results or planning meals saves you from writing the same long brief yourself. For a beginner, browsing the store is also a quick way to see what people use ChatGPT for.
4Try it now
- In the left sidebar click GPTs (or go to chatgpt.com/gpts).
- Search for proofreader and open one with many users and a good rating.
- Paste a paragraph of yours and let it correct it.
- Back in a normal chat, type @ and pick the same GPT to use it there.
5What you will see
The store, with a notice at the top saying "GPTs will be retired on December 11", then featured GPTs and categories like Writing, Productivity and Education:

Inside a GPT, the chat looks the same but with the GPT's name and a few suggested starter prompts.
6Watch out
- OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on December 11, 2026, and moving makers to plugins. If you built one, use the "Migrate to plugin" button before then; your old chats with GPTs stay. Do not build your life around a GPT; use it as a convenience, and copy any instructions you like into a Project. Check the help pages for the current status.
- GPTs are made by strangers. They can see what you type, and some are low quality. Prefer ones from well-known makers, and do not paste private data into them.
7Go further
Since GPTs are going away, put the instructions you like from a GPT into a Project instead (Chapter 1.11). Then read Chapter 1.14 to talk to ChatGPT instead of typing.
