1In one sentence

You can chat with ChatGPT for free without a daily cap on ordinary text messages, and paying unlocks the smarter version of the model, more pictures and files, and the helpers that do work for you.

2New words

  • Plan — the package you are on: Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise. Names and prices change; always check chatgpt.com/pricing.
  • Usage limit — how much of a feature you can use before ChatGPT asks you to wait. Since August 2026, ordinary text chat on Free has no fixed cap, but pictures, file uploads, research and voice still do. You can see your usage under Settings, then Usage.
  • Model — the version of ChatGPT's "brain". Free and Go get a smaller, faster one (GPT-6 Luna); paid plans get a bigger one (GPT-6 Sol). Chapter 1.5 explains.
  • Ads — advertisements. The Free and Go plans show them under some answers in many countries; Plus and above do not.

3Why you would want it

The free plan is the right place to learn: everything in Chapters 1.1 to 1.7 works there, with limits. People upgrade when they keep hitting the picture or file limits, when they want the smarter model for serious writing, or when they want Work mode and scheduled tasks (Chapter 1.15).

PlanWho it is forWhat it adds, roughly
FreeLearning and light useChat, web search, a few images and uploads a day, small memory, ads
GoA cheap step upMore images and uploads, longer memory, projects, a few scheduled tasks; still shows ads
PlusOne person using it most daysThe bigger model (GPT-6 Sol) with thinking levels, deep research, Work mode, no ads
ProHeavy usersEverything bigger, the "GPT-6 Pro" model (powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's strongest), unlimited images, early features like ChatGPT Slides and Dots
BusinessA small company (2 or more people)Plus-level for each person, admin controls, your data not used for training
EnterpriseLarge companiesBusiness plus security, contracts and control for IT

4Try it now

  1. Open ChatGPT, click your name or profile picture at the bottom left, then Settings.
  2. Look for Plan, Subscription or Usage. Read which plan you are on.
  3. Open chatgpt.com/pricing in a new tab and compare the columns.

5What you will see

Your plan name and a usage bar for the things that are limited. On the pricing page, a side-by-side table of what each plan unlocks, mostly in words like "limited", "expanded" and "unlimited" rather than numbers.

6Watch out

  • "Unlimited" messages still has a fair-use rule (if you send far more than a normal person would, ChatGPT may slow you down), and a heavy task (a long file, deep research, Work) uses its own separate allowance. If something stops working, check Usage before assuming it is broken.
  • Free accounts are set to let OpenAI use your chats to train future models. Chapter 1.17 shows where to switch that off.

7Go further

Stay on Free until you finish Chapter 1.9. If you keep running into limits, Go is the cheapest step and Plus is the real upgrade.
