1In one sentence
Gemini Live is a real voice conversation on your phone: you speak, it speaks back, you can interrupt, and you can show it your camera or your screen while you talk.
2New words
- Gemini Live — the voice mode. Started by the waveform or headphones icon at the right of the message box in the phone app.
- Interrupt — you can talk over it mid-sentence and it stops and listens, like a person.
- Camera share — in Live, tap the camera icon and point the phone at something; Gemini talks about what it sees.
- Screen share — in Live, share your phone screen so it can read whatever app you have open.
- Transcript — after a Live chat, the text of what was said appears in your chat list.
3Why you would want it
Hands full in the kitchen, walking, driving (passenger only), or simply thinking out loud. Live is also the best way to learn a language, to ask "what is this plant" or "what does this error on my oven display mean" by pointing the camera, and to get help with a form on your screen.
4Try it now
- Open the Gemini app on your phone. Tap the Live icon (the small waveform at the right of the box).
- Say: I run a small bakery and I want to plan a weekend market stall. Ask me questions one at a time.
- Answer out loud. Interrupt it at least once with Wait, shorter.
- Tap the camera icon. Point it at anything on your desk and say: What is this and what could I use it for?
- Tap the red button to end. Open the app's chat list; the conversation is there as text.
5What you will see
A full-screen view with a pulsing shape, the camera and screen-share icons at the bottom, and a pause and end button. Afterwards, the transcript in your chat history.
6Watch out
- Live is free on both Android and iPhone, but it runs on a quick voice model (Gemini 3.8 Live since September 2026). For a hard question, ask it in the text chat afterwards with the Pro model. On AI Plus and up, the same kind of voice chat is also arriving inside the Gmail, Docs and Keep phone apps.
- It hears background noise and sometimes answers a question you did not ask. In a loud place, use the microphone-only dictation in the normal chat instead.
- Live only started using memory (Chapter 1.15) in mid-2026, in the US first, and Gems or Skills may not be available in it. Do not count on Live knowing what you told the text chat, or the other way round.
