1In one sentence
Gemini is free with a Google account, and paying buys you smarter versions of Gemini, more use before you hit the wall, video making, and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs.
2New words
- Plan — the package you are on. In late 2026 the names are Free, Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. Check one.google.com/ai or gemini.google/subscriptions for current prices.
- Usage limit — how much you can ask before Gemini tells you to wait. Google now measures this as "compute" (a word for how much computer work your requests cost), not as a number of messages. It refills about every five hours, with a weekly ceiling. Google does not publish the exact numbers.
- Model — the version of Gemini's "brain". In late 2026 the family is Flash-Lite (fastest, simplest), Flash (everyday), Pro (deeper thinking), and 4 Argon (the newest, strongest, paid only). Chapter 1.5 shows how to pick.
- Storage — the Google Drive space that comes bundled with the paid plans.
3Why you would want it
The free plan is the right place to learn. Everything in this part except video making and the Gmail/Docs panels works on Free, with smaller limits. People pay when they run out of limit often, when they need the Pro or Argon model for serious work, or because the bundled Drive storage alone is worth it to them.
| Plan | Who it is for | What it adds, roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Learning and light use | Chat on "Auto" (since October 9, 2026 mostly the light Flash-Lite model), files, Deep Research, Canvas, images, Gemini Live, Gemini Notebook, 15 GB storage |
| Google AI Plus | Light but regular use | The Flash model, about double the limit, some video making, Gemini in Gmail, more Notebook, more storage |
| Google AI Pro | One person using Gemini most days | Pro and 4 Argon models, about four times the limit, Gemini in Gmail/Docs/Sheets, Tasks that run on their own, 5 TB storage |
| Google AI Ultra | Heavy users, creators, researchers | Highest limits, most video, early access to new features, 20 TB or more |
4Try it now
- At gemini.google.com, click your profile picture at the top right.
- Look for the plan name, or open Settings & help and find the plan or subscription line.
- Open gemini.google/subscriptions in a new tab and compare the columns. Ignore the numbers; look at which rows matter to you.
5What you will see
Your plan name, and on the subscriptions page a side-by-side list of what each plan unlocks. On Free, the model menu shows "Auto" and the paid models with a small lock; that is normal.
6Watch out
- Google changed the plans more than once in 2026. Since October 2026 the Pro models are leaving the Plus plan (each Plus subscriber gets an email with their own date), and Free now runs mostly on Flash-Lite. Any article older than a few months may be wrong about what each plan includes; the subscriptions page is the only safe source.
- A Deep Research run, a Pro answer, an image or a video eats far more of your limit than a short chat. If you run out quickly, that is why.
- Eligible college students can get a free year of Google AI Pro (in the US) or Google AI Plus (in 140+ other countries) if they claim it by December 31, 2026.
