← Midjourney · Asking well

1In one sentence

You can give Midjourney one of your own photos as part of the prompt, either as a loose inspiration (an image prompt) or as a strict ingredient for the new picture (a reference in the edit model).

2New words

  • Image prompt — a picture you attach so Midjourney borrows its general content and feeling, mixed with your words. Loose, not exact.
  • --iw (image weight) — how strongly the image prompt counts; default 1. Lower means "mostly my words"; higher means "mostly the picture".
  • Edit model — the newest part of Midjourney (opened for testing in late August 2026, still being improved) that takes up to four of your pictures plus an instruction and makes a new picture that keeps them: your real loaf, your real shop, your real packaging.
  • Attach to prompt — the website's name for adding a picture into the Imagine bar for the edit model.

3Why you would want it

Sam does not want a generic bakery; Sam wants Sam's bakery. With a photo of the real shop front and the instruction "same shop at dusk with warm lights on, autumn leaves on the pavement", you get a picture of your own place. With a photo of your real product, you can put it on a different table, in different light, in a lifestyle scene, without a photographer.

4Try it now

  1. Click the image icon on the right of the Imagine bar. Click Upload and choose a clear photo of a product from your phone.
  2. Your photo appears in the images panel. Drag it into the Image Prompt section. Type: on a marble cafe table with a cappuccino, morning light --ar 4:5. Press Enter.
  3. Now drag the same photo into the section for attaching to the prompt (the edit model) instead. Type: place this exact product on a marble cafe table with a cappuccino, morning light. Press Enter.
  4. Compare the two grids. Which one still looks like your product?

5What you will see

The first grid (image prompt) is "inspired by" your photo: similar colors and shape, but a different product. The second grid (edit model) keeps your product recognizable and changes the scene around it.

6Watch out

  • Your uploaded photos are stored in your account, and the pictures you make with them are public unless you are in Stealth Mode. Do not upload pictures of people who did not agree, or anything private.
  • A photo with a busy background confuses both methods. Crop the subject first.
  • The edit model is new and still being improved; some scenes come out wrong. Re-run, or shorten your instruction to one change at a time.

7Go further

Attach two pictures at once (your product and your shop) and ask for one scene with both. Then read Chapter 1.8 for keeping the same person or style across many pictures.
