1In one sentence
Paid plans can turn a sentence or a photo into a short video clip with sound, using Google's video model, now called Gemini Omni in the app.
2New words
- Veo — Google's older video-making model family. Version 3.1 was the one in the app earlier in 2026, and you will still see the name in articles and in places on Google's plan page.
- Gemini Omni — Google's current video maker inside the Gemini app. Since August 2026 the version is Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash: it can make a clip longer, fill in the motion between a first and a last picture, and upscale to 4K. In menus you will simply see "Create video".
- Clip — a short video of a few seconds. These are not films; think of a moving photo or a short social post.
- Reference image — a photo you upload so the video starts from it or keeps its look.
3Why you would want it
A six-second clip of steam rising off bread for a social media post, a product turning on a table, a short animated greeting. For most beginners the honest answer is "to play with it"; for a shop owner it can replace a cheap video shoot.
4Try it now
- Check your plan (Chapter 1.3). Video needs Google AI Plus or higher, and you must be 18 or over.
- At gemini.google.com, open the sidebar at the top left and choose Create video. (Or click + and choose Create video; on a Free account it shows a lock.)
- Type: A slow close-up of a fresh cinnamon roll being pulled apart, warm bakery light, gentle background music, no text.
- To start from your own photo, click Add image first, then describe the motion you want.
- Wait. A video takes a few minutes, and that chat is busy until it is done.
- Under the result, click Share, then Download video.
5What you will see
A short clip in the chat with a play button, your prompt under it, and Share and Download controls:

You can reply to edit it: Change the camera angle to top-down or Remove the plate.
6Watch out
- Clips are short, the number you can make is capped, and the cap is lower than you expect. Cheaper plans get a lighter, faster version of the model and fewer clips; check the subscriptions page before you plan a project around it.
- Video is not available to free accounts, to under-18s, or in every country, and uploading a video of your own to edit it is blocked in the EU, UK and Switzerland. The button may simply be absent or locked.
- On a Free account there is still a way to try it: on a computer, go to vids.new (Google Vids) and choose Create AI videos. Since September 2026 it makes free 1080p clips with the same Gemini Omni model for anyone with a Google account; paid plans get more.
7Go further
Read Chapter 1.11 to make something more useful than a clip: a document or a small app you can keep editing.
