1In one sentence
When one of the four pictures is almost right, you do not start over; you ask for small variations, repaint only the wrong part in the editor, widen the frame, or upscale the final one.
2New words
- Vary (Subtle / Strong) — makes four new versions of one picture, either close to it (Subtle) or quite different (Strong).
- Upscale (Subtle / Creative) — makes a bigger, sharper version for printing or a large screen. Subtle keeps it faithful; Creative adds detail and may change small things.
- Editor — the page where you paint over a part of the picture and describe what should be there instead (this used to be called Vary Region), or add space around the picture and let Midjourney fill it (outpainting). On the Alpha site the V8.2 editor also opens right inside the big view of the picture: type a plain instruction (remove the second fork), add up to 4 reference pictures, and see all your edits in one place.
- Pan and Zoom Out — extend the picture left, right, up or down (Pan), or step back so the same scene gets more surroundings (Zoom Out).
- Rerun — run the same prompt again for a fresh four. Since October 2026 the Alpha site is testing "Rerun (Thinking)" (Thinking Mode): Midjourney compares the picture with your prompt, spots mistakes such as wrong objects, text or hands, and makes it again.
3Why you would want it
The loaf is perfect, but there is a weird second fork. The shop interior is great but it is square and you need wide for the website banner. The portrait is right except for the hand. Starting over throws away the ninety percent that worked. Each fix uses a little GPU time and keeps what you liked.
4Try it now
- Open a picture you almost like. Under the picture, find the Creation Actions: Vary (Subtle, Strong), Upscale (Subtle, Creative), Rerun, Zoom Out, Edit (Pan arrows show on some versions; the editor's drag-to-widen does the same job).
- Click Vary Subtle. Four close cousins appear. Pick one.
- Click Edit. In the editor, choose the brush, paint over the wrong part (the extra fork), type in the prompt box what should be there (empty white plate), and press Submit.
- In the same editor, drag the frame edges to make the canvas wider, leave the prompt as it is, and submit again to extend the scene.
- When you have the final one, click Upscale Subtle, then download.
5What you will see
First, a row of buttons under your picture: Vary, Upscale, Pan, Zoom and Edit. Then the editor, with your picture in the middle, a brush and eraser on the left, a frame you can drag, and a prompt box. The edited picture comes back with only the painted part changed and the rest pixel-for-pixel the same.
6Watch out
- Do your edits first and upscale last. Editing an already upscaled or HD picture can send you back to a smaller size, and every extra step costs GPU time.
- Vary Strong and Upscale Creative can change faces and products. For anything that must stay exact, use Subtle.
- The editor is still being improved. Since late September 2026 it changes only the part you selected and keeps its quality over repeated edits, but some edits still come out odd. One change per edit, short instruction, and redo if needed.
7Go further
Take a square picture and use Pan to make a wide banner and Zoom Out to make a tall phone wallpaper from the same scene. Then read Chapter 1.10 to make it move.
