1In one sentence

Seedance is an AI that turns a written description, or a photo, into a short video clip with movement, camera work and sound.

2New words

  • Video model — an AI trained on a huge number of videos so it can produce new ones. Seedance is a video model, the way Claude is a language model.
  • ByteDance — the Chinese company that makes Seedance. It also makes TikTok and CapCut.
  • Text-to-video — you type a description, you get a clip.
  • Image-to-video — you give a picture, and the AI makes it move.
  • Clip — one short video, usually between 4 and 30 seconds long.
  • Version — Seedance has been released several times. Each release has a number: 1.0 (June 2025), 1.5, 2.0 (February 2026), 2.0 Mini (a cheaper, faster cousin, mid-2026) and 2.5 (end of July 2026). Higher numbers are newer and usually better.

3Why you would want it

A few years ago, a 10-second video of fresh bread sliding out of an oven needed a camera, lights and an afternoon. With Seedance, Sam from Sam's Bakery types a paragraph and gets a clip in a minute or two. It is good at realistic movement (people, animals, liquids, cloth), at keeping the same person or product looking the same across a clip, and, from version 2.0 on, at making its own sound: background noise, music and even voices that match the picture. Version 2.0 added "multi-shot", meaning one clip can cut between several camera angles like a real edited video. Version 2.5 raised the length to 30 seconds with matching sound made in the same go, accepts up to 50 reference files, can fix one spot in a video without redoing the rest, and can extend a clip to make it longer.

It is not perfect. Complicated physical motion, scenes with several people interacting, and readable text inside the video are still weak spots, in ByteDance's own examples as much as in users' tests. Hands, lettering on signs and fast action are where you will see the strangest results.

4Try it now

  1. Go to seed.bytedance.com and find the Seedance 2.5 page. Watch three or four of the example clips.
  2. For each one, ask yourself: what was the subject, what moved, and what did the camera do?
  3. Write down one clip you would like for yourself, in one line. You will make it in Chapter 1.4.

5What you will see

Example clips that look like short film scenes or ads, with sound, often cutting between two or three angles. Notice how still the backgrounds stay while the subject moves; that is the part Seedance is known for.

6Watch out

  • Seedance makes videos, not truth. A clip of a product does not prove the product exists. Treat it as illustration.
  • Many sites use the Seedance name in their address to sell their own services. The official maker is ByteDance; everything else is a host (Chapter 1.2) or a copy.

7Go further

Chapter 1.2 shows the places where you can actually press the button, because ByteDance's own page is mostly a showcase.
